Lashing & Securing Survey in Antwerp

Lashing & Securing Survey in Antwerp – Ensuring Compliance with the Approved Method Statement

Earlier this month, JM Marine Surveys was appointed to attend a “Lashing and Securing Survey” in the Port of Antwerp on behalf of our client. The attendance formed part of the pre-shipment quality assurance process, ensuring that all cargo securing operations were carried out in full compliance with the approved Method Statement and industry best practices.

Our surveyor remained on site throughout the operation to verify that the lashings, dunnage, and securing arrangements met the specified requirements for both the cargo type and the intended voyage. Each stage of the operation — from pre-loading preparation to the final tightening and inspection — was closely monitored and documented.

Particular attention was given to:

  • The condition and type of lashings used (chains, turnbuckles, wire ropes, and tensioners);
  • The distribution and alignment of securing points;
  • Compliance with IMO Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code); and
  • Adherence to the vessel-specific Method Statement approved by the charterer and cargo interests.

The final report provided our client with a comprehensive photographic record and clear confirmation that all operations were completed safely and in accordance with the agreed securing plan.

Adding Value Through Technical Support

Beyond supervision, JM Marine Surveys also assists clients with lashing and securing calculations, including:

  • Determination of required securing strength,
  • Cargo distribution analysis, and
  • Review or preparation of Method Statements in line with the IMO CSS Code and relevant class requirements.

This integrated approach ensures that both the planning and execution of cargo securing operations are handled with precision, efficiency, and full compliance.
